A straightforward skirt simple for beginners or make it more complex by adding pockets and trims. Materials Needed: Sewing machine (although it could be done by hand) Fabric - cotton or linen for example Matching thread, reel and bobbin Elastic - 3/4" or 1" wide enough to go round the waist Iron I choose a perfect Autumnal fabric because it's Autumn (and nearly Halloween!!) This is a 100% cotton fabric from  The Sewing Studio First you need to measure the waist and length from waist to desired hem length, just on the knee works well. I decided to pop a hem in a complementary fabric on the bottom so added enough for the seam allowance when joining the 2 fabrics together. Use the whole width of your fabric then cut your desired length PLUS 1/2 inch  (allowance for bottom hem) PLUS 1 1/2" (allowance for elastic channel for the waistband). Example - if your skirt length needed was 10.5" the total depth needed would be 12.5...

Purchasing handmade children's clothes is a big commitment financially, there are many mass produced cheaper alternatives on offer out there. They aren't of the same quality but sometimes the purse dictates the purchase. Here at DSD I try and give an extra bit of growing room in all our clothes or use designs that grow with the child such as the Anna dress which easily converts to a tunic then a top. Straight forward t-shirts and hooded tops are a little more problematic as they are shirt length already, there is however a way round it. This was given to me by a boy who loves his Raggedy Rainbow Hooded Top but having a growth spurt has meant the length is just too short now. He had requested extending colours of yellow and green. A quick measure and spin on the overlocker - with matching rainbow thread - and the top is extended so it will last until the next growth spurt or maybe 2. This can easily be achieved at home by using a zig zag stitch on your sewing ...

Popped into the local fabric shop today to grab some Autumnal fabric for a tutorial blog on making a skirt and managed to walk out with some extras that definitely were not on the list! A perpetual problem that leads me to request more shelving regularly. Fox Panel and main fabrics The fabric is by Moda from designer Gingiber I got mine from here The Sewing Studio I managed to sneak away to the studio this afternoon and got the first skirt made and I love it. The geometric main fabric for the body of the skirt with the deep side pockets make for a stylish simple skirt that lets the fabric speak.  Front on  One side with a rabbit pocket Other side with a foxy pocket  I would team this with a plain long sleeved t-shirt in cream, a black cardigan, thick tights and chunky boots. Wow what can I say, J K Jersey fabrics have got a winner with this round of custom fabrics! It is my youngest boys turn to have something made up for him and him being him wanted everything! Leggings, t-shirt, pants and whatever else I could get out of it. In the end he had Zane Leggings (pdf from Elliedactyl ) and a long sleeved t-shirt using applique templates to reflect the fabric design. Fabric pre wash  Fabric post wash, minimal colour loss, colour catcher is next to it and just has a very slight grey hue. Minimal shrinkage, just a few mm. Fabric is soft and easy to work with. The recipient LOVED the design at first sight and wants to wear top and leggings all together all the time. First up are the Elliedactyl Zane Joggers, he loves the slim fit but not the harem crotch so much so I redraft them for him so it's not so baggy - he doesn't do baggy, at 8 years old he will wear 5/6 year old jeans so they are spray on tight!
