With my last big festival of the year approaching next week I thought I'd let people know my Top 10 Tips for doing Festivals with children.
Tip 1 - Ear defenders are a must even if you aren't right down at the front their ears need protecting, we personally use the Edz Kidz ones.
Tip 2 - When you are setting up your sleeping space insulate ground under you more than the covers you have on top. Use blankets or foil space blankets, even newspapers do the job. Practice safe co sleeping as the easiest way for everyone to keep warm! Hats/socks and lots of layers are the best way to go. My boys take their duvets as well as sleeping bags.
Tip 3 - These plastic trugs are perfect for storing wet weather gear and welly boots when you get back to the tent. The tent stays clean and everyone knows where their boots are when it's time to go again.
Tip 4 - Take lots of snacks and fruit, also refillable water bottles are a lot more environmentally friendly and cheaper long term than the plastic single use ones.
Tip 5 - A cart is invaluable for trekking your gear from your car to campsite but can then be used for little ones who have tired legs or just need a snooze while you watch the show.
Tip 6 - Use a sling, from newborn to 5/6 ish (or more) a sling will be immensely helpful, allowing them to snooze, stay safe, out of the mud while you watch your favourite band, use the cart for all the 'stuff' that inevitably comes with children.
Tip 7 - Pack some toys/colouring/story books, these help with a bit of downtime, festivals can be overwhelming for many children with the noise and people so they might need some quiet time back at the tent and this ensures they have something familiar and quiet to occupy themselves with if needed.
Tip 8 - Buy the armbands to write your mobile number on and take a photo each day so if the worst happens you have an exact clothes description available. On the first day walk round the site and show them where to go or who to go to if lost. Make sure your mobile phone holds it's charge for as long as possible by switching to airplane mode when not needed. A charged power bank is also really useful to take.
Tip 9 - Take lots of babywipes for all the family. Good for a general wipe down and quicker than queuing for hours for the showers! Perfect for cleaning sticky sweet ice cream off hands and faces to help discourage wasps. Also handy to use to clean those delightful festival toilets, don't forget spare loo roll.
Tip 10 - A basic first aid kit is a must - some of my must have items are plasters, tic remover, sterilising wipes, tweezers and a selection of homeopathic remedies. Don't forget to check you have enough of any medication needed.
Have fun!
